“What a rush!” Stan shouted at the top of his lungs. He sprinted up the hillside to the top of the bluff. He had taken his third jump after spending part of the afternoon with Phil and Justin working on the anchor in the hull of the ship. He caught up with Kat, Jodi, Carlos, and Bruce. Rosie, who had just finished another dive, was down below swimming back to shore.

“Such a total riot,” Stan said, slightly out of breath. “I didn’t know this was gonna be such a kick.” He observed Jodi looking in the direction of his muscular chest. He flexed. “Nice, ain’t it?”

Her eyes met his. “I was looking at the cross you’re wearing—if you must know.”

He grabbed his abs pretending to be stung by her comment.

She softened. “So why do you wear a cross, anyway?”

He reached for it. “I’m not really sure. Just thought it looked cool.”

Stan could tell she wasn’t buying his explanation.

“Okay, so it’s kind of my good luck charm. I kiss it before every football game. Got it from my mom for protection on the field. There. Are you happy?”

“I liked your first idea better.”

They traded smirks.

“Hey guys, speaking of ideas, why don’t we try diving off that edge of the bluff?” Stan pointed past the scrub brush. “Look how soft the edge is. It’s covered by moss. Probably won’t be so tough on our feet.”

Jodi looked skeptical. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea. Mrs. Meyer said we’re supposed to stay between the pine tree and the scrub brush. Didn’t you hear her?”

“No. I’ve been with Phil, remember? What does she know about cliff diving anyway?”

Jodi stared at him. “Stan, if you had been there, you’d know she was just telling us what Phil said.”

“Did you actually hear him say don’t dive over there?”

“Well, not exactly. But Mrs. Meyer—” Jodi started to explain.

Carlos cut in. “Jodi, since when do you believe what Mrs. Meyer says, anyway? I’m with Stan. He’s right. My feet are getting kinda roughed up from these stones.”

Stan looked at Bruce and Kat.

“Come on, you guys. Live a little. Just look at the water over there; it’s even calmer than this spot,” Stan said as he took a few steps toward the landing past the brush.

Bruce said to Kat, “You know, that part of the bluff doesn’t look as high as it is here. Maybe we should give it a try.”

Kat shrugged her shoulders. “I’m in.”

“You guys go right ahead. I’m staying put,” Jodi said, standing her ground. She looked after them as they trotted off. “What am I supposed to tell Mrs. Meyer?” she shouted, cupping her hands to her mouth.

Stan looked past Jodi and saw Mrs. Meyer in the distance just beginning to climb the hill. “If we hurry, she’ll never know,” Stan said then urged them to move faster.
